Visiting Artist at Denison Presents Slide Lecture

Posted: April 11, 2005

Richard Koenig, a Vail visiting artist at Denison, will present a slide lecture of his photographic artwork titled "From Depiction to Deception" at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (April 19) in the Cleveland Hall Art Annex (201 North Mulberry St.). Koenig's visit and lecture was rescheduled from its initial February date.

An assistant professor of art at Kalamazoo College (Mich.), Koenig had a solo exhibition, "Ambivalent Views," in conjunction with The Midwest Photographers Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College in Chicago in 2003, and another, "Inserts and Suspended Images," during 2002 at the Downstairs Gallery of the University of California Berkeley in San Francisco and at the L&B Viewing Room in Portland. He was a finalist in two recent competitions -- the Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2003 and in the Roche Contemporary Art Prize in Australia in 2001.

Koenig earned a bachelor of fine arts degree at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, N.Y.). After working in commercial art in the New York area for 10 years, he returned to his hometown of Bloomington, Ind., to earn a master of fine arts degree at Indiana University. He joined the Kalamazoo faculty in 1998.

His video work has been shown in the United States, Canada, France, Australia, Japan and Yugoslavia. His most recent piece, entitled "Koan," was screened at the Antimatter Festival of Underground Short Film and Video in Victoria, Canada. He is currently showing a photographic piece at the Chicago Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center in an international exhibition called "The Art of Artist Statement." Koenig's photographic works also have been included in exhibitions in Australia and New Zealand and across the United States from Massachusetts and Connecticut to North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio and Iowa. He is represented by Flatfile, a Chicago gallery.
