Denison Invites Community Members To Apply For Kraus Memorial Awards
Posted: May 7, 2001
Residents of the Granville/Licking County area interested in taking English courses at Denison University as a Community Scholar under the auspices of the Dick Kraus Memorial Fund are invited to apply now for next fall's classes.
Community Scholars are residents of Licking County, 30 years of age or older, who may enroll in one course on a non-credit basis each semester. Kraus was instrumental in establishing the Community Scholar Program. A student-faculty-community writing group that he instigated in the winter of 1976 continues to meet at Denison.
Kraus, an emeritus member of the English department who died in 1999 at age 75, taught writing at Denison from 1966 until his retirement in 1991. As a tribute to his legacy in creative writing, memorial gift funds have been endowed to sponsor Community Scholars interested in pursuing English department course offerings.
Letters of application for Community Scholar funding should be sent to: Jim Davis, Chair of the English Department, Denison University, P.O. Box M,43023. Deadline for the fall semester is June 15. Applications for spring semester should be submitted by Nov. 19.
The application letter should name the course for which funding is sought and the applicant's reasons for wanting to take the class. The English department Kraus Program will pay fees and book expenses.
