Denison Presents Joint Cello-Viola Master Class/Concert

The Denison University music department will host a joint viola and cello concert and master class at 11:30 a.m., Thursday (Feb. 10) in Burke Recital Hall. Musicians include Denison affiliated studio instructor Cora Kuyvenhoven on cello and guest Miami University Professor Mary Harris on viola. The event is free and open to the public.

A short recital by the performers, who have played together since their graduate school days, will include works by Beethoven, Clarke and Lutoslawski. The master class will follow the mini-recital.

Harris serves as associate professor of viola at Miami University (Oxford), is a violist in the Oxford String Quartet, and is principal violist of Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Columbus. She is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington and went on to complete her graduate work at the Institute of Chamber Music at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Harris also has served as principal violist of the South Dakota and Fox Valley Symphonies and the New American Chamber Orchestra, touring Europe with them and performing at a number of international festivals.

In addition to cello instruction at Denison, Kuyvenhoven also is the administrator of the University Suzuki Program. She has been soloist with the Plymouth (Mich.) Symphony, National Arts Chamber Orchestra and the Windsor (Ontario) Symphony. She has been the principal cellist of the Columbus Opera and plays with the Oxford String Quartet and Pro Musica. Kuyvenhoven earned her master of fine arts degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, did post-graduate work at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and completed her doctorate in music at the University of Iowa in 2000.
