Film projection performance at Denison

Date of Event: October 24, 2012

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Experimental filmmaker Kerry Laitala will present her recent award-winning work in a live, multiple projector performance at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the performance space of Denison University’s Knapp Hall (300 Ridge Road). The performance is sponsored by the Department of Cinema and is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jonathan Walley at walleyj@denison.edu or visit www.denison.edu

According to Steve Polta of the San Francisco Cinematheque, “Kerry Laitala is a gem of the cinematic underworld. Her long engagement with the avant-garde processes of cinema positions her as one of the most informed process-based artists working within the medium.” Committed to analogue, celluloid filmmaking, in resistance to the spread of new digital media, Laitala is an expert in do-it-yourself filmmaking practices, such as cameraless photography and hand processing techniques. In her film-based performance works, she uses multiple film projectors to create a unique experience of light, color, illusion and sound, reminiscent of the psychedelic multimedia light shows of San Francisco in the 1960s.

Laitala has shown her work at the Whitney Museum, the Corcoran Museum of Art, the San Francisco MOMA, the Tate Modern, the Cinémathèque Française and the Andy Warhol Museum, as well as the Sundance Film Festival, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the New York International Film Festival and the International Film Festival, Rotterdam. She teaches and is currently chair of the film department at the San Francisco Art Institute.
