GRANVILLE -- The Denison University psychology department will present Mark Leary, a faculty member at Wake Forest University, to discuss "Taming the Curse of the Self" based on his latest book at 4 p.m. on Friday (April 1) in the Burton Morgan Lecture Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Leary's research interests are in social and personality psychology. "I have been particularly interested in how people's behavior and emotion are affected by their concerns about others' impressions, evaluations and acceptance of them," says Leary. "Recently, I've also become interested in the ways in which people's inner self-chatter creates personal and social problems."

In addition to "The Curse of the Self" (Oxford University Press, 2004), Leary has published "Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods," which is in its fourth edition, "Interpersonal Rejection," "The Social Psychology of Emotional and Behavioral Problems," and "Self-Presentation: Impression Management and Interpersonal Behavior."

Leary served on the Denison faculty from 1980 to 1983 and at the University of Texas at Austin from 1983 to 1985. He is now professor and chair of the Wake Forest University psychology department. Leary earned his bachelor's degree at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and his master's and doctorate at the University of Florida. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, a charter member of the American Psychological Society, and a member of Sigma Xi, the Society for Experimental Social Psychology and the International Society for Self and Identity. He serves as the editor of the journal Self and Identity and on the editorial boards of three other journals.
