Service of Candlelight Lessons and Carols Ushers in Holiday Season

Posted: November 19, 2004

The Denison Chamber Singers will sing the University's fifth annual Service of Candlelight Lessons and Carols in Swasey Chapel on Friday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. The ensemble, under the direction of Stephen Caracciolo, fills the chapel each December with the lyric sounds of choral music and leads a congregation of Denison students and Granville residents in the singing of traditional carols.

Stephen Caracciolo, director of choral organizations at the University relates, "Denison's Candlelight Lessons and Carols was inaugurated in 2000 to serve as both the Christmas Chapel for the University and as a seasonal gift to the citizens of. We invite guests to the chapel to hear concerts throughout the academic year, but this is the one event during that time when students and Granville residents join to actually make the music as a community. Singing familiar carols with 500 other people is an experience you never forget."

This much-anticipated service, signaled by a week of Swasey tower bells, is a tapestry of biblical readings in King James English, traditional Anglican prayers, litanies, processions, and beautiful music all enveloped in a chapel bathed in candlelight. Reverend Mark R. Orten, University Chaplain, is the Presider for the service and Columbus organist Timothy Fields will lead the singing of the congregational carols from the organ console.
