Denison Hosts Emory Psychologist To Discuss 'Science And Pseudo-Science'

Posted: February 17, 2003

The Denison University psychology department will host Scott Lilienfeld to discuss "Science and Pseudo-science in Everyday Life: A Field Guide to Evaluating Extraordinary Claims." This convocation, set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 25) in Herrick Auditorium, is free and open to the public. A second presentation, "Psychopathic Personality: Links Among Theory, Assessment and Research," is set for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 26) in Higley Auditorium.

Lilienfeld has received much public attention for his examinations of the Rorschach inkblot test and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. He earned his bachelor's degree (1982) at Cornell University and his doctorate (1990) at the University of Montana.

Currently an associate professor of psychology at Emory University, Lilienfeld's research interests include the causes and assessments of personality disorders (especially psychopathic personality) and personality traits, psychiatric classification and diagnosis, and pseudo-science. He also is working on projects in antisocial behavior and socialization, childhood psychopathy and its relation to externalizing and internalizing disorders, and sex differences in the behavioral manifestation of psychopathic personality traits.

Lilienfeld has been widely published in psychology journals and is the past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology. He is editor-in-chief of "The Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice," a psychology peer-review journal dedicated to distinguishing scientifically-unsupported from scientifically supported-techniques in the field of mental health.
