Associate Professor of Political Science Andrew Katz
Denison University has honored Andrew Katz, associate professor of political science, as the new holder of the Class of 1954 Richard G. Lugar Professorship in Public Policy. The presentation took place at the college’s annual Academic Awards Convocation held on April 15, in Denison’s Swasey Chapel.
In conferring the prestigious recognition, Denison President Dale T. Knobel said of Katz, “Andy’s mixture of generosity, kindness, and being well-grounded offers us a cogent explanation of the reason that Andy has assumed the Class of 1954 Richard G. Lugar Professorship in Public Policy. Andy has taken over as the director of the Lugar Program, and in each aspect of the work that the directorship entails, he has shown calm authority and thoughtfulness for others. Whether in helping co-ordinate internships in Washington, D.C., or in arranging for the world’s top diplomats to speak at Denison and participate in classes, Andy has been outstanding.”
At their 50th reunion in 2004, Senator Lugar’s classmates established the Lugar Professorship in his honor. Senator Lugar (R-Ind.) has served on Denison’s board of trustees since 1966. Lugar is the U.S. Senate’s most senior Republican member and the longest-serving member of Congress in Indiana history.
Katz joined the Denison faculty in 1993. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and holds a master’s and doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. Much of Katz’s research examines the relationship between public opinion and foreign policy.
