Denison Student Groups Invite Former 'Jane Roe' to Campus

Posted: April 13, 2004

Norma McCorvey, "Jane Roe" of Roe v. Wade, will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 21) at Denison University's Swasey Chapel about her experiences before, during and after the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. The Denison Students for Unborn Life and the Denison Lecture Series are sponsoring the event.

McCorvey was 22-years-old when first approached by Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee in 1969, two lawyers attempting to overturn the Texas statute outlawing abortion. Thirty-one years after acting as plaintiff in the Roe v. Wade case, McCorvey has converted to Catholicism and is attempting to overturn the legalization of abortion.

Her autobiography, "Won by Love," details her involvement with abortion clinics, her consequent battles with drugs and suicide and ending with her discovery of Catholicism.

Once known as the "poster-child for choice," according to her organization's literature, McCorvey now directs the Crossing Over Ministry, a non-profit organization formerly known as Roe No More Ministry, which focuses on promoting the sanctity of human life.

McCorvey has traveled to three countries and throughout 40 states speaking on college campuses and appearing on radio shows and documentaries about right-to-life education and alternative crisis pregnancy solutions. She has made appearances on NBC, CBS and ABC news shows includingLarry King Live. She has most recently been in the news when a federal judge agreed to hear her arguments for reconsidering the 1973 Supreme Court decision.
