McIlvoy teaches at New Mexico State University, where he has been editor in chief of "Puerto del Sol" magazine for 27 years and has received numerous teaching awards, including the New Mexico Council of Teachers of English Excellence Award. He also teaches in the M.F.A. program in creative writing at Warren Wilson College and serves on the board of directors of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. McIlvoy holds a B.A. from the University of Illinois, an M.A. from Colorado State University and an M.F.A. from the University of Arizona.

"The reason for perfecting technique," McIlvoy says of writing, "is not to become more invulnerable as a writer, but in order to consciously invite greater vulnerability into your own writing process. What I teach best is risk-taking."
