GRANVILLE, Ohio—The larger-than-life story of Sarah Bernhardt is portrayed in “Memoir,” a two-person play by John Murrell. Two performances will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, at the Burke Black Box Theatre (240 West Broadway). The performances are free and open to the public, and reservations are advised. To make a reservation or for more information, contact 740-587-6527 or visit www.denison.edu.

Murrell’s two-act, two-person play is set in August 1922 on the actress’s estate off the coast of Brittany. Bernhardt, portrayed by Denison Assistant Professor of Theatre Cheryl McFarren, dictates a second volume of memoirs to her secretary, Georges Pitou, portrayed by Scott Olson. As Bernhardt wrestles with the details, she ultimately gets Pitou to perform the supporting characters in her life’s drama. Touching, funny and full of historical interest, the play teaches about life, legacy and the transformative power of the theatre.
