Author Stephanie Mitchem Addresses 'African-Americans and Healing'

Stephanie Mitchem will speak on "African Americans and Healing: Facing Fears, Feeding Dreams," at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 17) in the Burton Morgan lecture hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Mitchem is an associate professor at the University of South Carolina (Columbia) where she holds a joint appointment in religious studies and women's studies. Her research interests focus on contemporary religious thought, women in the African Diaspora and post colonialism, class and African American religious thought and experience. She is co-editor of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion and a contributing editor of Crosscurrents, a print and on-line journal.
Mitchem has authored three books, including "African American Women Tapping Power and Spiritual Wellness" (2004); "Introducing Womanist Theology" (2002); and the forthcoming "African American Folk Healing." She earned her bachelor's degree magna cum laude at Sacred Heart Seminary College, (Detroit), her master of theological studies at St. John Provincial Seminary, (Plymouth, Mich.), and her doctorate at the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.).
Mitchem's convocation is part of this year's Black Studies series titled "Healing the Broken: Souls, Bodies, Worlds." Her appearance is also sponsored by the Goodspeed Lecture Series.
