Date of Event: February 1, 2007

Posted: January 22, 2007

Denison University will honor Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month with a film festival. Four films about South Africa will be shown at 7 p.m. each Thursday in February in Slayter Auditorium. This is the film festival's second year and it will mirror Denison's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration theme "The Words and the Music: South Africa." The sponsors for this month-long film festival include: the African Student Association, the Black Student Union, Doane Library, the English and international studies departments, Multi-Cultural Student Affairs, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Admission is free and open to the public.

The festival will begin Thursday (Feb. 1) with "Cry Freedom" starring Denzel Washington. "Cry Freedom" is the story of Steve Biko, the South African Black Consciousness Movement leader, who was murdered while in police custody, and, his friend, Donald Woods, the white editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper.

The second installment of the festival is Thursday (Feb. 8). "Amandla!--A Revolution in Four Part Harmony" is a documentary film depicting the struggles of black South Africans against the injustices of apartheid through the use of music.

The film festival continues on Thursday (Feb. 15) with a viewing of "Out in South Africa." This film is a documentary about a country in the state of transition; specifically of lesbians and gays, blacks and white, Indian and Asian, from townships, cities and rural areas who speak of their lives and desires as homosexuals in post-apartheid South Africa. The festival is scheduled to end on Thursday (Feb. 22) with the viewing of "Tsotsi." The film is about the main character, Tsotsi, a young man living the life of a thug in an African township and his struggles to survive post-apartheid South Africa.
