Somalian Advocate Basra Mohamed at Denison
Date of Event: September 15, 2008
Posted: September 5, 2008 / Last Updated: September 10, 2008
Basra Mohamed, founder and executive director of Denjir Media Community Services, will hold a conversation hour as a part of the McGregor Connections Initiative lecture series at 7:30 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 15, in the Burton D. Morgan Center Welsh Hills Room (150 Ridge Road). Toni King, associate professor of women’s studies and Black studies, will mediate the discussion, which will focus on Basra Mohamed’s life and work. The conversation hour is sponsored by the McGregor Connections Initiative. The event is free and open to the public.
After arriving from a Kenyan refugee camp, where she lived as civil war raged in her native Somalia, Mohamed recognized a need to overcome language barriers and other obstacles that kept immigrants from acquiring jobs and services. She started the first Somali-English newsletter in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and founded Danjir Media Community Services, a Somalia-English media service in Columbus, Ohio.
This year’s McGregor Connections theme is “Urbanscapes,” during which the campus community will explore the relationship between people and the urban environment.
Future speakers include Daniel Alejandrez (Sept. 17) and Thomas Sugrue (Sept. 18).
