Denison Hosts Mock Congress

Date of Event: December 16, 2009

Posted: December 4, 2009

The Environmental Studies Program at Denison University will host a Mock Congress from 5 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the Burton D. Morgan Center Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). The event is free and open to the public.

The Mock Congress will be organized by the Environmental Politics and Decision Making (EPDM) class with their professor, Abram Kaplan, serving as the speaker of the house. The Congress will feature the final debate on environmental bills that students have been working on this semester.

The EPDM students spent the first 10 weeks of the fall semester creating formal bills related to environmental policy. After presenting the bills, the class then became a miniature Congress, with each student role-playing a party and state identity. A series of standing committees reviewed all of the bills over a month-long mark-up process, leaving a select few bills to be addressed in the final debate.

The panel for the event includes Mark Forni, the deputy director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture; Jane Harf, the executive director of the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio; Charles Dilbone, Director of Business Operations for the Granville School District; Keith Dimoff, Executive Director of the Ohio Environmental Council; and Jim Pletcher, associate professor in the political science department at Denison University.
