Date of Event: October 9, 2009

Posted: October 5, 2009

The Denison Museum’s storied Burmese collection is highlighted in the upcoming exhibition “Baptists in Burma.” The exhibition opening event is from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 9, in the Denison Museum (240 West Broadway). The exhibition will run through Dec. 13, with daily hours from 1 to 4 p.m., and is free and open to the public. For further information, contact 740-587-6255 or visit www.denison.edu/museum.

This exhibition examines the complex relationship of Christian missionaries in India and Burma and earlier British colonial expansion in South Asia. It looks at the many meanings associated with missionaries’ “possession” of art and artifacts of Burma, such as precious art objects, like gilt Buddhas, and historically lesser-valued material culture, such as tribal language Bible translations.

This exhibition was developed in part from a curatorial/museum studies course taught at Denison University in the spring of 2009, also entitled “Baptists in Burma.”
