GRANVILLE — The Denison Museum will present a contemporary Korean film series on Tuesday evenings, beginning Oct. 7. The film series consists of four Korean films and complements the museum’s current exhibition, “From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics.” The screenings will take place at the Mulberry House Lounge (202 North Mulberry Street), and will continue over a period of five weeks. It is free and open to the public.

Curated by Tim Lanza, a Denison Museum consulting film curator, the film series and exhibition will provide insight and inspiring forms of education and cultural awareness to the community.

The contemporary Korean film series schedule of films is as follows:

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m. “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring.” (2004) A critically acclaimed coming of age story takes place on a floating temple in which an old monk teaches a young boy about Buddhism. Directed by Ki-duk Kim, this film portrays a boy’s journey to adulthood. 103 minutes, rated R.

Tuesday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. “Chi-Hwa-Seon.” (2003) A fictionalized biography of 19th century Korean painter Ohwon/Jang-Seung-ub. Directed by Kwon-taek Im, this film won a Best Director award at Cannes. 117 minutes, rated R.

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m. “Woman on the Beach.” (2008) A leisurely paced romantic comedy about filmmaking by one of Korea’s leading directors, Sang-soo Hong. This film has been described as “intelligent,” with sly humor performed by a superb cast. 127 minutes, rating unknown.

Tuesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. “The Host.” (2007) A skillfully produced science fiction romp by top Korean director, Joon-ho Bong. In this special effects film, a careless morgue empties hundreds of bottles of formaldehyde in to the sewers near Seoul's Han River giving birth to a terrifying mutant with a taste for blood. 119 minutes, rated R.
