Music Department Features Two Special Concerts

Denison University’s Department of Music will highlight a wide variety of music in two concerts during the last weekend of September. Showcase Concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). And a recital featuring violinist Wolfgang David and pianist David Gompper will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). Both events are free and open to the public.
The Showcase Concert will be a musical buffet featuring classical, jazz, gospel, bluegrass and Broadway. The concert will highlight performances from many student ensembles including: Bluegrass Ensemble, Casey Cook and Mark Wade, directors; Chamber Singers, Wei Cheng director; Chamber String Orchestra, Cora Kuyvenhoven, director; Flute Ensemble, Leslie Maaser, director; Gospel Choir, Milton Ruffin, director; Jazz Ensemble, Pete Mills, director; Singer’s Theatre Workshop, Belinda Andrews-Smith, director; and Trumpet Ensemble, Mark Wade, director.
The violin and piano recital program will include works from Brahms and Debussy. Also performed will be “Ikon,” a 2008 composition by David Gompper that contemplates a 19th century icon of St. Nicolas. The finale will be a new work by composer Ching-chu Hu, chair of the music department at Denison. “Devotion” is influenced by Chinese folk songs, Chopin nocturnes and tango music. Written for David and Gompper, “Devotion” is dedicated to Sebby, the composer’s canine companion of many years.
