A 300-chair Musical Chairs Extravaganza will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Reese~Shackelford Common (200 Ridge Road). Hosted by Denison University’s Benchmark Collective in collaboration with the Denison Art Collective, the event will have music supplied by The Exceptionals. Refreshments and souvenir T-shirts will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to those who “find seating” the longest. The event is free and open to the public, and families are welcome.
Made possible by a grant from the Burton D. Morgan Program in Liberal Arts and Entrepreneurship Education, the Denison Art Collective and the Benchmark Collective were created to foster a greater awareness of the arts community at Denison, while giving both art and non-art majors the opportunity to initiate enterprises and participate in community-based art events. The Benchmark Collective is comprised solely of senior studio art majors; its purpose is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the arts, and to inspire and equip future art collective members with the ability to leave a lasting mark on campus through an artifact or event of some kind.
Through the Burton D. Morgan Program in Liberal Arts an Entrepreneurship Education this year, studio art seniors have been working with an artist and entrepreneur from Columbus, Adam Brouilette, president of the Couchfire Artist Collective. The students have been applying his philosophy to their work by designing and donating a bench to the Denison campus. Through visits to Junctionview Studios and other on-campus workshops, the students have focused on issues related to founding an arts organization, including creating a mission statement, building on the members’ existing talents and promoting arts events.
