Denison Staff Members Collaborate With Students For NewArt Gallery Exhibit

Posted: March 30, 2000

The creative partnership between east Newark residents and students and Denison University has produced a second exhibit of artworks at the NewArt Gallery located at Blessed Sacrament School (E. Main and Penney Avenue). Opening reception for the "Projected Forecasts" exhibit is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday (April 6) with additional viewing time from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday (April 8). The exhibit may also be viewed during school hours and by appointment by calling (740) 345-4125.

Carol Phillips Whitt, service learning coordinator at Denison, and Ronald Abram, assistant professor of art, are exhibiting works along with students in kindergarden through eighth grade from the Blessed Sacrament School and the Salvation Army After-School Program. Whitt's exhibition works are titled "Window Treatments," while Abram's are gathered under the title "The Sky Above."

The John W. Alford Center for Service-Learning at Denison is a sponsor of the gallery exhibition. The cooperative art program's goals include expanding to include students from other nearby public schools and other Licking County community resources The long-range goal of the project, says Abram, is a community art center that will provide opportunities in art as an outlet for students and members of the community. The NewArt Gallery is one step in encouraging the community to engage in and with art. Another step will be a print making studio which will open at Blessed Sacrament for the community's use. It is being funded by a grant to Abram from a Denison endowment for development of service learning opportunities. Denison students in Abram's print-making course will work with east Newark residents at the studio.
