Denison's Goodspeed Series Presents Douglas Oakman to Discuss 'Radical Jesus'

The Denison University Goodspeed Series presents Douglas Oakman, associate professor of religion at Pacific Lutheran University, to discuss "The Radical Jesus: 'You Cannot Serve God and Mammon.'" Set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (March 25) in Slayter Auditorium, this event is free and open to the public.

An ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,Oakman is the author ofJesus and the Economic Questions of His DayandPalestine in the Time of Jesus: Social Structures and Social Conflicts, an awarding-winning book he co-authored with K. C. Hanson. He has published numerous articles such as "Money in the Moral Universe of the New Testament," "The Lord's Prayer in Social Perspective" and "The Archaeology of First-Century Galilee and the Social Interpretation of the Historical Jesus."

Oakman earned a bachelor's degree (1975) with honors from the University of Iowa, a master of divinity (1979) from Christ Seminary-Seminex and a doctorate (1986) from Graduate Theological Union. A member of the faculty at Pacific Lutheran University since 1988, he served as chair of the religion department from 1996 to 2003 and was recently elected by colleagues to a three-year term as Dean of Humanities. Oakman has also taught at Santa Clara University, University of San Francisco and San Francisco Theological Seminary and participated in archaeological excavations at Jotapata and Cana in Galilee during the 1990s.
