The Denison University Department of Physics and Astronomy will host an open house beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 18, at Swasey Observatory (300 Chapel Drive), with a rain date set for Saturday, June 19. The first clear night will be the only night on which the observatory will be open. Observations will be taken of the Moon and Saturn. The open house is free and open to the public.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Denison’s Swasey Observatory. If skies are clear, visitors will use the Warner & Swasey 9” refracting telescope in the observatory’s dome and at least one 8” reflecting telescope set up at ground level. The telescopes will be accessible until 11 p.m. To determine if the observatory will be closed due to weather conditions, contact the observatory that afternoon at 740-587-6477; a recorded message will be left if there is a cancellation for that night.
