Denison Student Wins Ohio 5 Student Biennial Juror's Award

Posted: February 4, 2008

Nathalie Van Balen captured one of six Juror’s Awards and the cover of the exhibition program for the 2008 Five Colleges of Ohio Student Biennial Art Show.

Van Balen was one of eight Denison students who placed artworks in the juried show. Her acrylic on canvas, “Tiny Realizations,” created a tangible relationship between two small and unlikely objects: a single Lego piece and a dead bee. The exhibition is at the College of Wooster Ebert Art Museum (1220 Beall Ave., Wooster, Ohio) until March 2. Free and open to the public, the exhibition showcases works by more than 40 artists from Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Wooster. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Other Denison students whose work is featured in the exhibition are: Alice Brindle, a senior from Wake Forest, N.C., “Skull 1” cardboard and wire; Christy Chang, a sophomore from Evansville, Ind., “Whispering Warning” intaglio print; Zach Coneybeer, a junior from Uniontown, Pa., “Untitled” (Grass Man), plywood, aluminum, soil and grass; Dustin Conley, a senior from St. Johns, Mich., “Envy for Sale” pastel on paper; Jacci Fishburne, a sophmore from Hurley, N.Y., “Desert Storm” digital photography; Jennifer Keehner, a senior from Plymouth, Mich., “A study in Anxiety,” photograph; and Alexandra Lippman, a sophomore from Newtown Square, Pa., “Slip, Stick, Go” sugar, corn syrup and food coloring.

Juried by Jacqueline S. Nathan, gallery director at Bowling Green State University, the exhibition was culled from 181 works submitted by 103 artists to 52 works by 40 artists. Nathan noted, “… we must all ask ourselves what makes a particular work stand out. For me, it is often a conceptual realization through technical skills—an idea and its execution coming together in a special way—that makes a work exceptional. In the process of selecting the award-winning pieces, I looked for a precise and spirited vision that succeeded on several levels.”
