College-Age Men Present Educational Program on Sexual Violence

Posted: October 19, 2007

Sometimes violence hits too close to home. One in Four, a group of college-age men who travel the country discussing the battle against sexual violence, will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in the Burton D. Morgan Center Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). The presentation, "How to Help a Sexual Assault Survivor: What Men Can Do," aims to educate men on how to help women recover from a rape experience while lowering men's "rape myth" acceptance and their self-reported likelihood of raping.

One in Four is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing rape by the thoughtful application of theory and research to rape prevention programming. It targets training and technical assistance toward colleges, high schools, the military and community organizations.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Women's Studies Department and the Laura C. Harris Symposium, falling under this year's theme of "Feminism in War, Feminism in Peace," which looks at the range of violence -- from that in our homes to violence on a global scale -- and examines its complex causes and impact on women's lives. Series events scheduled for the remainder of the fall semester include Anuradha Bhagwati, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War and a former U.S. Marine, on Nov. 8; and a Denison University Museum exhibition of works by modern Iraqi artists from the collection of Dia al-Azzawi from Nov. 30 to March 7. More events are set for the spring semester.
