Denison Orchestra Performs Final Concert of the Year

Date of Event: May 1, 2010

Posted: April 26, 2010

The Denison University Orchestra, directed by Andy Carlson, associate professor of music, will perform at 7 p.m., on Saturday, May 1, in Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). The concert will feature two symphonic works, including a newly written string orchestra arrangement, “Red Haired Boy,” by Carlson and the third movement of associate professor Ching-chu Hu’s violin concerto, “Fire Spirit,” in which Hu will conduct and Carlson will play the violin. Students also will perform “Symphony No. 5” by Schubert and “Marche Slave” by Tchaikovsky. The event is free and open to the public.

Founded by Carlson in 1999, the Denison University Orchestra has grown from a 13-piece baroque orchestra to a 60-member full symphonic orchestra under his direction. When created, this group was the first all-student orchestra in Denison’s history.

Carlson teaches violin, advises the Suzuki faculty, and directs the bluegrass ensemble at Denison. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States with groups such as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the University of Georgia Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, and the Land of Legend Philharmonic. Working as a studio musician and string arranger, Carlson has recorded for Warner Bros., Atlantic, Elektra, and with artists such as R.E.M. In fall 2010, Carlson will be administrating the new bluegrass academic concentration at Denison.

Hu is associate professor of composition and theory and chair of the Department of Music at Denison. A frequent pianist and conductor, he has written scores for several short award-winning films.
