Denison Senior Uses Dance to Portray Struggle for Identity
Posted: November 16, 2007 / Last Updated: November 19, 2007
Denison University senior Tasmin Pepin-Perry's senior research will culminate in a presentation titled "I Am" at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, in the Doane Dance Performance Space (231 W. College St.)
Pepin-Perry (Marysville, Ohio), a dance major and English minor, choreographed the piece to represent the struggle to stand out from the crowd while still fitting into a group.
"I Am" will feature seniors Letitia Easom (Indianapolis), Brooke Hayes (Columbus, Ohio), Lesley Lighthiser (Truckee, Calif.) and Carroll Wallace (Cincinnati) and freshmen Courtney Ego (Victor, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Gannon (Pittsburgh). The dancers each were encouraged to express their own identity by choosing their costumes. The six students will be performing a contemporary piece that consists of spoken words as well as music, including "I am Not My Hair" by India Arie and a version of "Amazing Grace."
Pepin-Perry's goal is not only to convey the struggle toward identity, but also to encourage audience members to question their own identity. Refreshments will be served following the performance to allow the audience to interact with the dancers and Pepin-Perry.
