Pharaoh's Daughter Concert Melds Traditional Hasidic Music with Mysticism

Posted: February 5, 2007

The Denison University Lilly Artist Series presents Pharaoh's Daughter, a band that blends psychedelic sensibility and a pan-Mediterranean sensuality, in concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 11) in the Burke Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Basya Schechter leads the band through swirling Hasidic chants, Mizrachi and Sephardi folk rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings and electronica. She developed her sound through her Hasidic music background and a series of trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan, and Greece. Schechter began her career by changing the tuning of her guitar so that it sounded like a cross between two more exotic stringed-instruments, an Arabic oud and a Turkish saz, and adding harmonic minor melodies and odd time signatures.

Pharaoh's Daughter has toured extensively through America, and Eastern and Western Europe, as well as Greece and the United Kingdom, and has played such prestigious stages as Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

The band has recorded four albums and Schechter is the recipient of grants from the New York State Council of the Arts, The American Composers Forum and the American Music Center. Other players in Pharaoh's Daughter are: Daphna Mor, Meg Okura, Yuval Lion, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, Noah Hoffeld, Daniel Freedman and Jason Lindner.

The Lilly Artist Series, a collaboration of Denison University's department of music and the Lilly Committee, features musical artists from many different backgrounds and cultural traditions. The purpose of the series is to invite artists whose careers reflect a passionate commitment to their musical art and the culture out of which that music grows.
