Pond Owners Sought to Participate in Denison Biology Department's Gray Tree Frog Research
Posted: February 25, 2002
Students working on a research project at Denison University are in need of additional ponds in the area in which to pursue their study of gray tree frogs. New or established natural or installed ponds, or even seasonal wetlands, might qualify for the project which seeks to determine what characteristics of ponds make them good breeding sites for one species of gray tree frogs,Hyla chrysocelis.
Pond owners' participation can be passive or active. The pond needs to be located within a five minute walk of a driveway or road. Just four or five student researchers will visit the pond to note its physical characteristics and to take water samples and make other simple tests of water quality. Pond owners can take an active role by making a recording on a wet night of the frog calls - a chorus - in the pond area or a passive role by just allowing the student researchers to return and check for the presence of the gray tree frog.
Denison Assistant Professor Becky Talyn, biology department, is guiding this project and would be glad to answer any questions pond owners might have in regard to participating. Pond owners would be able to obtain the information collected on their particular pond as well as the results of the whole project.
If you have a pond which might be suitable for this research project, please contact the student research coordinator Lisa Bucci by e-mail at bucci_l@denison.edu or call Professor Talyn at (740) 587-5677.
