Visiting Artists at Denison Present Lecture on Japanese Printmaking
Posted: September 8, 2006
Two Vail visiting artists at Denison, Takumi Itow and Makiko Hattori, will present a lecture on their individual careers as printmakers in Tokyo. Entitled "Contemporary Japanese Printmaking," the lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 18) in the Cleveland Hall Art Annex (201 N. Mulberry St.). The lecture will be in Japanese with translation and is open to the public.
During their visit at Denison in August, both Itow and Hattori created new works in the Cleveland Hall print studio and they will meet with Denison students in classes on this visit.
Following his graduation in 1979 from Hosei University, Tokyo, Itow became a member of the Japan Print Association. Now the association's president, Itow teaches woodblock printing at Waseda University and at the NHK Culture Center in Hikarigaoka. His work incorporates myth and ritual through traditional Japanese woodblock techniques.
Hattori studied etching at the Toyko Printing Atelier in 1981. She also is a member of the Japan Print Association and now lives and works in Setagaya City in Tokyo. Hattori creates detailed etchings centered around Japanese folklore and legend.
