Clara Ramona

NEWARK, Ohio — Flamenco is an art form composed of el canta, the song; la guitara, the guitar playing; and el baile, the dance that together create the experience. Clara Ramona, choreographer, teacher, director, producer and dancer will bring the art of flamenco to the Midland Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Midland Theatre (36 North Park Place, Newark, Ohio). Ramona will be performing with her son, rising star Nino de los Reyes, sharing the stage in Sangre Flamenco En Gira (Flamenco Blood on Tour). Nino was born into a powerful and passionate flamenco dynasty - both parents are international stars - and he began studying the form from the age of five.  This performance celebrates that heritage as well as being an extraordinary reunion, the first time Nino has shared the stage with his mother in the United States in nearly 12 years. The concert is sponsored by the Denison University Department of Dance and Denison’s Laura C. Harris fund. Tickets are $12 and available through the Midland Theatre at http://www.midlandtheatre.org

Ramona began studying ballet and traditional dance at the age of 5 in her native Philippines. After she moved to the United States, she continued her studies in ballet with the Aina Janson Ballet Academy, the Boston Ballet and the Boston Conservatory of Music and Dance where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. She developed her professional career in the United States as the lead dancer and choreographer in the Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre.

This event is second in a series called “A Decade of World Dance at Denison.”
