GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison University hosted the fifth annual Summit on Ohio Campus Safety and Security on Wednesday, Aug. 17, in Herrick Hall Auditorium. The daylong event featured Jim Petro, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents and member of the Denison class of 1970, and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

More than 200 representatives of public and private colleges and universities from all over Ohio participated in the conference. Keynote speaker Steven Healy, managing partner of Margolis Healy Solutions for Safe Campuses, discussed strategies for institutions to enhance safety and security.

“Ohio is a shining light in campus security,” Healy told the group, referencing the yearly Summit and other proactive efforts in the state to bring multidisciplinary teams together for the creation of effective programs.

The Ohio Board of Regents was established by the Ohio General Assembly in 1963. Responsibilities of the Board include developing an independent annual report on the condition of higher education in Ohio and advising the chancellor on issues of statewide importance. The Board’s Office of Campus Safety and Security assists public and private institutions in their efforts to ensure the safety, welfare and security of their students, faculty, staff, visitors and property.

In 2008, the Board of Regents held its annual retreat at Denison, during which President Dale Knobel presented a keynote address on independent institutions of higher education.
