Denison University Hosts Third Relay for Life Event
Date of Event: April 21, 2006
Posted: April 10, 2006
Students at Denison University are organizing the school's third American Cancer Society Relay For Life event from 6 p.m. Friday (April 21) until noon on Saturday (April 22) in the Mitchell Athletic Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivors and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to combat the disease. Previous Relay For Life events at Denison raised $113,000 for cancer research. This year's goal is $70,000, and more than $10,000 has already been collected. Teams and individuals are collecting pledges for walkers who will circle the Mitchell track, selling bracelets and "Casual Friday" relaxed dress code permission slips, and devising other creative fundraising ideas.
Denison's Relay For Life will feature a survivor room, plenty of live music, games, a silent auction, food, and informational booths. A special children's corner will be set up on Saturday morning.
Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and will include comments from Lauren Antognoli, a student and cancer survivor, and Dale Knobel, president of Denison University. Cancer survivors will take the track for a special lap at 6:25 p.m. A special luminaria service is set for 9 p.m. on Friday night at Barclay-Thomson Field to honor all cancer victims. The names of honorees will be read as participants walk along the path lighted by the luminarias. Closing ceremonies are planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
