Denison Presents Poetry Reading By Award-Winning Author

Date of Event: February 5, 2007

Posted: January 22, 2007

The Beck Lecture Series starts off the spring semester with a reading by the winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association's New Writers Award. Anele Rubin will read from her work at 8 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 5) in Barney Davis Board Room. The reading is free and open to the public.

Rubin has taught since 1988 as an adjunct professor in the English department at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University. She is the author of "Trying to Speak" (2005), a collection of dramatic lyrics that question our integrity as humans. Her collection is the winner of the Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize in 2004 and the GLCA New Writers Poetry Award in 2006. The Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize is offered annually to a poet who has not previously published a full-length collection of poems.

Rubin earned her bachelor's degree in liberal studies at Louisiana State University in 1976, and both her master's degree in English in 1985, and a post-master's certificate in advanced religious studies in 1987, at New York University. Her poems have appeared in literary journals such as River Styx, Midwest Quarterly, Rhino, and Spoon River Poetry Review.

Poet Philip Levine, who chose "Trying to Speak" for the Wick Prize, praises Rubin's poetry for being "artful, subtle, and modest."
