Denison University First-Year Program To Host Scott Russell Sanders

GRANVILLE -- Denison University First-Year Program welcomes author Scott Russell Sanders from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 8) in the Burton Morgan Lecture Hall. His presentation is titled "Staying Put: Making a Home in a Restless World," in which he assails the modern impulse toward mobility and argues the virtues of connecting deeply and intentionally with our neighbors, our communities and with the natural world that surrounds us. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Sanders is the author of several novels and collections of short stories and creative non-fiction as well as children's books. His work focuses on this year's theme "Home," and his collection of essaysStaying Put: Making a Home in a Restless World, has brought him to the attention of this program. His other publications include novels such asThe Invisible Company, Bad Man Ballad, TerrariumandThe Engineer of the Beasts. His collections of short stories includeWilderness PlotsandFetching the Dead, and his works of creative non-fiction consist ofWriting From the Center, The Paradise of Bombs, Secrets of the UniverseandIn Limestone Country.

He has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lilly Endowment. Sanders' work has also received the Associated Writing Programs Award in Creative Nonfiction, the Kenyon Review Award for Literary Excellence, the Great Lakes Book Award and the Ohioana Book Award.

Sanders is currently a distinguished professor of English at Indiana University, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1971. He received honorary degrees from Otterbein College, Berea College and Unity College, and has been honored with Indiana University's highest teaching award, the Frederick Bachman Lieber Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Other speakers scheduled this fall for the First-year Program theme of "Home," are Frances Kuo, Alex Kotlowitz and David Shipler.
