Professor Thomas D. Schultz, a member of Denison University’s Department of Biology since 1990, was honored at today’s Academic Awards Convocation as the 2009 winner of the Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award. In presenting the award, Provost Bradley Bateman said Schultz “is well known at Denison for his constant attention to his students’ learning as well as to his own teaching. In fact, he is described by his department colleagues as someone to whom they regularly turn as a mentor, but who always approaches his own teaching as a student ... ”
The Brickman Award was established in 1997 in honor of then-retiring Board of Trustee Chair Charles A. Brickman. The recipient is chosen by a faculty committee of previous winners of the award, along with the provost and associate provost. The nominees must be tenured members of the Denison teaching faculty who are models of commitment to teaching and who also have strong records of dedication to students inside and outside the classroom. The recipient must have demonstrated a vibrant interest in the learning process, as well as an understanding of teaching as a continuously evolving art form: someone who embraces the teaching and mentoring of students not just as a profession, but as a calling.
Schultz, the Tight Family Professor in the Natural Sciences, is a behavioral ecologist. He earned degrees in biological sciences and zoology from the University of Chicago and the University of Texas. In addition to serving on numerous committees at the college, Schultz has been chair of his department, an elected member of the Faculty Appeals Committee and director of the Denison University Biological Reserve. Internationally, he is known for his collection of digital photographs of insects, more than 800 of which are available on the Internet.
