Vail Artist Paul Scott Visits Denison for Lecture

Posted: March 12, 2007

Denison University's Vail Visiting Artists Program presents visual artist, writer, and curator Paul Scott to give a lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday (March 20) in the Cleveland Art Annex Room 104 (201 N. Mulberry Street).

Scott is a freelance artist based in a rural part of Northern England. His lecture is titled "Cumbrian Blue(s)...Ceramics, Landscape Memory and Confection." Scott is known for his research into ceramics and the prints used to decorate them. In "Cumbrian Blue(s)," he deals with the duality of decorated plates, which may be placed on a table and eaten off or hung on a wall and looked at.

A critic has observed that urban populations usually view the countryside as a place of escape and of connectedness with Nature, but that Scott disabuses such romantic notions. Scott's Cumbrian Blue(s) series indicates that the very earth is contaminated by radiation and that we are fatally disconnected from Nature.

Scott has lectured and exhibited widely in Europe, North America, and Australia. Currently a doctoral fellow at Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design, Manchester Metropolitan University, England, he has had solo exhibitions in Stockholm, Sweden, Geneva, Switzerland, Copenhagen, Denmark and Aberystwyth, Wales. His works are in the collections of universities, galleries and museums in Australia, South Korea, South Africa, Hungary and many other places around the world. He has written a book, "Ceramics and Print," in which he discusses the history of ceramics and print. He concentrates on the techniques used by contemporary ceramicists.
