GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) honored Denison University earlier this year as a leader among institutions of higher education for their support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Denison was admitted to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.
A recent example of community service was the Make a Difference Day that took place on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Denison Community Association partnered with sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma to sponsor Make a Difference Day: Kappa Karnival, a carnival-themed event open to members of Licking County. More than 35 student organizations participated in the event, hosting activities such as face and pumpkin painting and making caramel apples. The group also made food for the St. Vincent de Paul homeless center, packed snacks for after-school program Y.E.S. Clubhouse and made holiday cards for a nursing home in Licking County.
Patrick A. Corvington, chief executive officer of CNCS said of the Honor Roll recognition, “Congratulations to Denison University and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities. We salute all the Honor Roll awardees for embracing their civic mission and providing opportunities for their students to tackle tough national challenges through service.”
Lyn Robertson, director of The Alford Center for Service Learning, said, “We are pleased to be recognized in this way; it is a tribute to the 1292 students (57% of our student body) that engaged in service to our local community during the 2009-10 academic year.”
The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs. For more information, visit www.nationalservice.gov.
