Special Yoga Programs Set at Denison University
Posted: March 5, 2007
A Yoga practitioner from Chennai, India, will spend a two-week residency at Denison University providing an introduction into Indian beliefs about the mind-body connection. S. Ravi Shankar will lead a series of events including workshops on yogic breathing and vedic chanting, a five-day program on yogic practice, and a reading group. Shankar's visit is sponsored by the Lilly Visiting Scholar Program, the Office of Religious Life, the Laura C. Harris Symposium on Gendered Borders, and the Women's Studies Program.
The programs which Shankar will present during his residency are open to Denison students, faculty and staff first and to community members if space is available. Community members may call 740-587-5727 to have their name put on a waiting list.
The five-day program, "Flow, control and quiet," will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday to Friday (March 19 to 23); a workshop on "The Nourishing Breath" is set for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 27); and a second workshop, "The Enchanted Space," will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday (March 29). All of these events will be in the Welsh Hills Room of the Burton D. Morgan Center. "Flow, Control and Quiet" is designed to help participants develop a personal practice to continue thereafter. "The Nourishing Breath" will have participants work with the body and the breath to understand the yogic claims about a relationship between the two and transferring relaxedness, control and sensitivity from the breath to the mind. "The Enchanted Space" will use vedic chanting to reach an enchanted space within.
Shankar and his wife, Sheela, are students of T.K.V. Desikachar, a well-known yoga teacher, and operate a center in Channai called Yoga Nidhi where they teach individuals and corporate clients.
