The Denison University Singer’s Theatre Workshop presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a Tony-winning musical by William Finn. Performances are at 3 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, and 3 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5, in Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). Directed by Belinda Andrews-Smith, the performances are free and open to the public.
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” is a musical comedy that chronicles six pre-adolescent misfits competing for love, understanding and first place in the spelling championship of a lifetime.
Traditionally, members of the audience are asked to participate in the spelling bee and the Denison production will honor this convention. In each performance four new audience volunteers will be recruited to participate on-stage as guest spellers. The contestants are chosen through pre-show lobby interviews and audience questionnaires. Spellers of all ranges of talent are welcome.
The show features John Arnold ’13 (Chapel Hill, N.C.), JD Carter ’12 (Sarasota, Fla.), Ben Chiewphasa '14 (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Molly Coyne ’12 (Smyrna, Ga.), Katherine Damisch ’11 (Northbrook, Ill.), Alexa Dorris ’12 (Indianapolis), Ben Flox ’14 (University Heights, Ohio), Xander Jarowey ’11 (Waban, Mass.), Alec Lee ’13 (Knoxville, Tenn.), Hillary Maloney ’13 (Pittsburgh), Jenni Messner ’11 (Aurora, Ohio), Herb Porter ’13 (Columbus, Ohio), Ian Shapiro ’13 (Xenia, Ohio), Vanessa Theus ’13 (Beloit, Wis.), and Yu Itaka ’11 (Saitama, Japan).
