Singer's Theater Presents "Venus and Adonis" at Denison

Denison University presents the Singer’s Theatre Workshop performance of the opera “Venus and Adonis,” directed by Belinda Andrews-Smith, on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5 and 6, at 3 p.m. in Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). The opera is only an hour in length, and the event is free and open to the public.
“Venus and Adonis” was composed in 1683 and is based on the classical myth of Venus and Adonis. The Singer’s Theatre Workshop performances will be accompanied by a faculty string quartet, harpsichord and flutes. String players and faculty members Cora Kuyvenhoven and Andy Carlson will perform for the opera as well as Kevin Wines as conductor and keyboard player. The set is created by Emmy-award winning set designer Chris Clapp, and the costumes are provided by Costume Specialists.
The opera features Zach Elmassian ’10 as Adonis, Katherine Damisch ’11 as Venus, Molly Coyne ’12 as Cupid, Erica Hughes ’10 as the Narrator, Leah Ewing ’10 as the Shepherdess, Travis Sterner ’10 as the Shepherd, John Arnold ’13 as the Huntsman, and Alexa Dorris ’12 and Bobby McGlynn ’10 as the Graces. The ensemble of shepherds, cupids, and huntsmen are portrayed by Rachel Bohn ’12, J.D. Carter ’12, Mariann Bostic ’13, Ryann Collins ’13, Debbie Cuellar ’11, Amanda Daniels ’11, Lucia Guerra ’13, Rob Hand ’11, Yu Itaka ’11, Henry Jochem ’12, Alec Lee ’13, Hillary Maloney ’13, Christa Nannos ’12, Hannes Ryding ’11, Ian Shapiro ’13, Saira Tekelenburg ’12, and Vanessa Theus ’13.
