Denison Singers’ Theatre Workshop Presents ‘The Gondoliers’

Date of Event: December 6, 2008

Posted: November 26, 2008 / Last Updated: December 11, 2008

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the Singers’ Theatre Workshop will present two performances of the comic operetta “The Gondoliers” at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, and Sunday, Dec.7, in the Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). The event is free and open to the public.

“The Gondoliers,” written by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as a comic satire on class distinctions, premiered in the Savoy Theatre in London, England, on December 7, 1889. The operetta ran for 554 performances, a major feat at the time. The plot follows two handsome gondoliers as they attempt to run the government after they learn that one of them is the prince of Barataria. The operetta also tells the story of Casilda, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, as she deals with the recent news that she was married to the missing prince of Barataria as an infant, making her the queen of Barataria. This light-hearted production has a lot of laughter and a surprise ending!

Directed by Belinda Andrews-Smith and accompanied by Kevin Wines, the Singers’ Theatre Workshop has a history of almost 20 different shows ranging from Broadway musicals to light opera. This auditioned group of student singers presents a full production with scenery and costumes once each semester.

The program features student performers, Jordan Wolff, Raymond Havey, Zach Elmassian, Ben Jacoby, Davis Bourland, J.D. Carter, Henry Jochem, Bobby McGlynn, Melissa Cyperski, Laura Kamin, Jenni Messner, Brynn Lewallen, Molly Coyne, Leah Ewing, Erin Mulhern, Samantha Smith, Katherine Damisch, Becca Davidson, Rachel Bohn, Sophia Chen, Carolyn Coppedge, Alexa Dorris, Kasey Alfonso, Amanda Daniels, Bryan Blaskie, Eric Elligot, Yu Itaka, Hannes Ryding, Rob Tatgenhorst and Owen Beamer.
