Posted: October 5, 2004

Jon Sobel, former general counsel and secretary to the board as well as senior attorney of Yahoo!, will be the keynote speaker for this year's "Career Week" events at Denison University. Sponsored by the career services office, the week will include speakers and career fairs for Denison students looking beyond campus to their working life.

Sobel will present "Ethics in the Workplace: The Dangers and Possibilities of Everyday Life" at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 14) in the lecture hall (Rm 115) of the Burton Morgan Center (150 Ridge Road). He will examine the impact of culture, values, and community and the contribution to individual ethics and behavior. The audience will learn how the trivial details of everyday life are where individuals' real choices are made. This event is free and open to the public.

Sobel has spoken to many college audiences, including those at Stanford University and the University of Michigan, and he enjoys discussing ethical decision-making and behaviors that are demonstrated in various industry sectors.

Sobel negotiated many of Yahoo!'s strategic agreements, guided the development of policies for controversial and novel internet issues and guided the legal strategy in the company's most significant disputes and regulatory matters. He has significant experience in complex commercial litigation and regulatory affairs, patent transactions and disputes, copyright and trade secret matters, mergers and internal investigations, privacy, technology, and new media issues.

Currently, Sobel is a partner for Folger Levin & Kahn LLP in San Francisco. He earned his bachelor's degree at Princeton University and his law degree at the University of Michigan Law School. He is a member of the California and Illinois Bar.
