GRANVILLE— The Denison University music department is featuring the Ohio-based Sonus Artis String Quartet for a concert titled “The Colour of Time.” The musicians will perform their own works in addition to a piece composed by Ching-Chu Hu, associate professor of music, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, in the Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). The event is free and open to the public.
“The Colour of Time” will consist of a variety of 20th century music ranging from classical to polka. Hu’s five-movement piece, “The Swash of Water and Red,” is influenced by Asian performance. The work uses techniques such as having the performers use guitar picks strumming their instruments to give a special effect that makes the string instruments sound more like Chinese instruments.
The Sonus Artis String Quartet is composed of members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, including the group’s founder and violinist Olev Viro, violinist Mary Jean Neuman, violist Jean-Christoph Saetti and violoncellist Pei-An Chao. The quartet promotes musical and cultural understanding through performances of Estonian music in Ohio.
Born in Iowa, Hu studied at Yale University, Freiburg Musikhochschule in Freiburg, Germany, and the universities of Iowa and Michigan. He is active as a pianist and conductor, and wrote the scores for several short award-winning films.
