Denison Hosts Puppet Theatre
Date of Event: November 9, 2006
Posted: October 29, 2006
A Philadelphia-based puppet theatre group that seeks to mobilize grassroots community efforts will give a performance at Denison. Michelle Posada, Spiral Q's Works Coordinator, and the Spiral Q Puppet Theatre will perform at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday (Nov 9) on Slayter Hall's third floor. This event is sponsored by The McGregor Connections Initiative and is free and open to the public.
Matthew Hart founded Spiral Q as a shadow puppet theatre, staging performances at local benefits and events after seeing powerful outdoor pageants at the Bread and Puppet Theatre while traveling in Vermont. He was struck by how the puppet images created around social change themes engaged people, but felt that there was a disconnect between the mostly white, middle-class performers and the subject matter. Soon, social change groups came to Spiral Q to make puppets, props, and effigies for demonstrations and education campaigns. Through these building sessions Philadelphia activists started to discover new ways of working together and communicating their issues.
Spiral Q Puppet Theatre seeks to mobilize grassroots community efforts to affect large-scale political and economic change. Spiral Q creates new plays based on current political events with particular attention to the experiences of marginalized groups and to matters of social and environmental justice.
