Denison Presents One-Woman Show About Holocaust Survivor

Posted: April 2, 2007

Denison University's Lilly Artist series presents "An Evening with Madame F," an original one-act, one-woman musical drama that tells the story of a musician who survived the horrors of Auschwitz. Performed by Claudia Stevens at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 10) in the Slayter Hall Auditorium, this dramatic monologue presents the concentration camp performer as an old woman.

Stevens is a composer, pianist, singer, and actor who has performed at more than 25 colleges and 100 communities throughout the United States and abroad. In "An Evening with Madame F," Stevens uses music actually played and sung by women in the camp, as well as survivors' accounts, to portray the struggle and moral confusion experienced by camp inmates who survived through performing for their captors.

The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Stevens also deals with the issue of treating the Holocaust as the subject for artistic expression. Stevens earned her bachelor's degree at Vassar College (New York), a master's in musicology from the University of California at Berkeley and her doctorate in musical arts from Boston University. She has taught at the College of Williams and Mary since 1977. She also has served on the faculties of Williams College and the University of Richmond.
