Widely considered Williams’ masterwork, this play was a landmark achievement when it premiered on Broadway in 1947 and won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Set in the French Quarter of hot and steamy New Orleans, the play deals with a culture clash between Blanche DuBois, a woman whose life has been undermined by romantic illusions which lead her to reject the realities of her life, and Stanley Kowalski, a rising member of the industrial, urban working class. When Blanche comes to live with her sister, Stella, and brother-in-law, Stanley, she is forced to confront a revelation of her tragic self-delusion.

Blanche is played by senior Vanessa Theus (Beloit, Wis.). Other seniors are John Hewson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) as Mitch, and Cheree Cain (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) as a Mexican woman. Juniors in the cast are Christopher Morriss (Allendale, N.J.) as Stanley, Madison Johnston (Chesterfield, Mo.) as Stella, and Meghan Callahan (Centennial, Colo.) and Pearson Handley (Bristol, R.I.) as Eunice and Steve Hubbell. Other cast members are sophomore Merlin Bell (St. Louis, Mo.) and first-year students Aaron Robertson (Williamsville, N.Y.), Matthew Harmon (Elkins, W.V.) and Flannery Maney (Worthington, Ohio).

Directing the play is assistant professor Mark Seamon. Associate professors Cynthia Turnbull and Peter Pauzé designed the costumes and lighting. Senior theatre majors on the design team are by Laura Hoffman (Charlotte, N.C.), scenery; Elyse Dolan (Canal Winchester, Ohio), sound; and Amanda DiMartini (Monaca, Pa.), hair and make-up. Dolan also is the assistant director and junior Emily Wright (North Royalton, Ohio) is the stage manager. Vail Artists-in-Residence for the production, both from Cincinnati, are Chad Weddle as fight choreographer and Julia Guichard as vocal coach.
