ACLU President, Author, Professor Makes Denison Lecture Series Appearance

GRANVILLE - The Denison Lecture Series will host Nadine Strossen, professor of law at New York Law School and the first woman president of the American Civil Liberties Union, for a speech at 7:30 p.m., Thursday (March 29) in Herrick Auditorium. This All-College Convocation is free and open to the public.

Elected president of the ACLU in 1991, Strossen has since made more than 200 public presentations per year, frequently commenting on legal issues in the national media. She has a weekly commentary on the Talk America Radio Network.

Strossen has written, lectured, and practiced extensively in the areas of constitutional law, civil liberties and international human rights. Her book,Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women's Rights(Scribner, 1995) was named a "notable book" by the New York Times. A second book,Speaking of Sex: Hate Speech, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties(N.Y.U. Press, 1995) was named an "outstanding book" by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America.

In 1986, Strossen became one of the first three women to receive the U.S. Jaycees "Ten Outstanding Young Americans" award. She also was the first American woman to win the Jaycees International's "The Outstanding Young Persons of the World" award. The National Law Journal has twice named her one of "The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America." Other awards include the 1996 Working Woman magazine listing of her as among the "350 Women Who Changed the World 1976-1996" and Vanity Fair's inclusion of her among "America's 200 Most Influential Women."

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard College in 1972, Strossen graduatedmagna cum laudefrom Harvard Law School (1975) where she served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. She practiced law for nine years in Minneapolis and New York City, before taking the faculty position at New York Law School.
