Denison University's Jazz Combo and Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble are performing a dual concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, in Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). The concert is free and open the public.
The Latin Jazz group will play compositions from Mongo Santamaria, Wayne Shorter, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Horace Silver, among others. The group consists of 10 Denison students, only three of whom are music majors or minors.
The Jazz Combo is under the direction of Tom Carroll, instructor of music at Denison. Since 2000, Carroll has coordinated the jazz studies program at Denison. He also has served on the faculties of The Ohio State University and Capital University.
Seth Rogers, a 2003 graduate of Denison and now studio instructor at his alma mater, is directing the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble. He recently completed his master of music degree in jazz studies at Youngstown State University. As a Denison student, Rogers studied percussion with Guy Remonko and composition with Ching-Chu Hu while playing in jazz ensembles led by Carroll and Pete Mills, including the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble.
