Denison University Concert Features Student Jazz Groups
Posted: March 17, 2003
The Denison University music department presents a concert featuring two of Denison's student musical groups, the Student Jazz Combo and the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday (March 26) in Burke Recital Hall. The groups are directed by Denison faculty members Tom Carroll and Guy Remonko, respectively. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert program includes compositions by Herbie Mann, Dave Samuels and the late Mongo Santamaria performed by the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble. "The ensemble achieves its unique sound through utilizing traditional Latin and Jazz styles within an instrumentation comprised of ethnic and traditional percussion instruments," said Remoko. The program also includes selections by Cedar Halton, Horace Silver and Carroll, performed by the Jazz Combo.
Carroll has been an instructor in Denison's music department since 1980. He has performed with Ernie Watts, Marvin Stamm, Rusty Bryant and Gary Carney and leads his own ensemble, The Tom Carroll Trio. Carroll organizes Denison's annual Jazz Guitar Festival and is a member of the Faculty Jazz Quintet. Since 2000 Carroll has coordinated the Jazz Studies program at Denison. He also serves on the faculties of Ohio State and Capital University. His first recording,"City Lights," featuring Hank Marr, Gary Carney and Jim Rupp, will be released this spring.
Remonko is professor emeritus of music at Ohio University and an affiliated studio instructor of percussion at Denison. In addition to teaching percussion, he is a member of Denison's Faculty Jazz Quintet and the Bob Thompson Trio. He is also active as a clinician and free-lance jazz drummer/percussionist presenting clinics and performing at major clubs and festivals throughout the country.
