Denison Singers Theatre Workshop To Present A Night Of Topsy Turvy Fun
Posted: April 24, 2000
- The Denison Singer's Theatre Workshop group will perform scenes from two of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular operettas, "The Mikado" and "The Pirates of Penzance." The presentation, which is free and open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday (April 30) in Burke Recital Hall.
"The Mikado," which has been glamorized recently with the release of the Oscar-winning movie, "Topsy Turvy," is the story of two lovers, Nanki-Poo and Yum Yum. The operetta pokes fun at English and Japanese etiquette of the Victorian era. "The Pirates of Penzance," features the well-known song, "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General."
The Denison production will have costuming, humor, lively dancing and singing.
The Singer's Theatre Workshop is directed by Belinda Andrews-Smith, coordinator of the vocal department. Choreography is provided by Jocelyn Romanak.
The ensemble consists of 26 Denison students. Members of the class of 2000 include: Jocelyn Romanak, Bill Kempey and Kirstra Otto. Students of the class of 2001 are: Jimmy Clawson, Whitney Burdsall, Michelle Robinson and Amanda Sage. Performers from the class of 2002 include: Scott Esposito, Rob Ross, Marriane Sevachko, Heather Hawke, Erin Roberts, Jason Roberts, Steve Norris, Simone Mulla, Meredith Farrar, Linda Shuman, Mandy Oliver and Nicole Puterbaugh.
